Remembering Aunt Altrea

Altrea and Edna attended Elementary school together. Altrea wanted to be in the same class as Edna, so when the teacher promted Edna to the next grade and class Altrea got up and went with her and told the teacher that she wanted to be with her sister and she got and went. She ended every phone call with her sisters with those loving words, " I Love You".

Remembering Aunt Altrea

Some 28 years ago or so when I needed someone to watch my children for the summer, after thinking through the available family, mommy suggested that I take them to Aunt Altrea. I didn't hesitate for one minute and before she could blink her eyes, there was Dawn and I toting Kendra and Keshida off to Altrea. Raymond Jr., Barry, Perry, Vanessa, Yolanda, all took time to play with their little cousins but it was Aunt Altrea who put the fear of God in them and I returned to pick up perfect little angels. At least they were for a while, I remember now that I'd threaten to take them back to her, especially Keshida if they didn't behalf. It worked for a while but both of them were forever endeared to Aunt Altrea, and so was I.

The Tuesday before she went down to NC, she called to say she was going, the phone ran and I heard the familiar… Julia, were my sister at, for 50 years she called me Julia, I smiled then and I smile now, I never corrected her, I told her mommy wasn’t there and she said she was going to see her grandkids and was going go to Ginny and take her some greens. I told her to have a good time. She said” tell that gal”, (mommy) I called. Then she said love you and hung up…. Aunt Altrea, Julia will miss you.

Remembering Aunt Altrea

I have had many a road trip with Aunt Alterie, and they were very enjoyable because of her love for life. The last two trips I remember so vividly and fondly.
- a few years ago I had to go to NC for business. My Mom and several of the sisters including Aunt Alterie decided to go with me to see the family in SC. So we got on the road and I could hardly drive for laughing at the things (many of which I can't even mention in mixed company) Aunt Alterie would say. She did it mostly just to entertain us and get a reaction from us. Anyone who knew her knew that she loved her family, life and loved to laugh. They dropped me at my hotel in NC and then proceeded in my van onto SC were Vinita hosted them and made them delicious food. They saw their brothers and family and they then picked me back up on the way home and that ride was equally enjoyable!

- A couple of years ago when Anthony and Andrea were married Aunt Alterie was the only one in her generation that could make the wedding. She was determine to come and represent for Auntie Barbara and the others. She had the time of her life. Her daughter Vanessa dropped her off at the wedding. After the wedding Aunt Alterie needed a ride to the reception. Although my truck was much too high for her to get up into, she was determined. After several attempts to get her into the truck, Robne and Judy said that we needed to go in and get "the boys" (Melvin & Darren) to help us get her in. While Judy went to get them I said, the heck with that, we don't need "the boys" I got this. With that I went around (the entire time Aunt Alterie was giggling and laughing) I put my hip under hers and pushed and pushed until I got her in the truck. When "the boys" came out they couldn't believe that I alone had managed to get Aunt Alterie in the truck. So I then got behind the driving wheel looked at her and said, why do you have to ride with us anyway, you just want to be with us. Aunt Alterie said "yeah" smiled and giggled. We all laughed and went to the reception where we all sat at the table with Aunt Alterie. She had such a good time watching the young ones and acting young herself, and of course, sharing her wonderful humor and laugh. We all really enjoyed that day celebrating with Anthony & Andrea and our wonderful family. I have many other fond memories of her, to know her was to love her and life.

R.I.P Aunt Altrea

As we all deal with the passing of Aunt Altrea I have to remind myself that life is precious. Life is a gift. Life is not promised. Next time you see your mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, friend, remember to tell them how much they mean to you. Tell them today how much you love them.

Wahlia attends Frostburg State University

Congrats to Marlana's daughter Wahlia who is currently enrolled in a Regional Math and Science center program at Frostburg State University! The 6 week residential program for gifted students helps high school seniors prepare for college and assist with application fees, aptitude tests, etc.

Michael Joseph Jackson 1958-2009

As we all reflect on the genius that was Michael Jackson, I'm comforted by the fact that I was able to see him live during his Victory Tour with the rest of the Jackson 5. I will always remember flying to Chicago and being in total disbelief that I was actually going to see him in concert. I'm still in shock that he's gone, but I'm grateful that we got to witness the greatest entertainer the world has ever seen. RIP MJ.
